Tromp-l'oeil

This is Tromp-l'oel at its funniest! A life size panoramic view of Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, and Humphry Bogart playing pool under a thatched cabana that appears to be an extension of this homeowners sports bar, fills the room with a whimsically festive feeling. The sunny beach in the background, and the play with shadow, gives a real feeling of depth and space while the guests party and play pool on the real pool table in the room.

An exotic scene appears to transport you into another world, as you soak in the deep tub of bubbles in the bathtub below, in this large master bathroom. The near extinct golden lion tamarin monkey voyeuristically peers at the bather from her perch atop an old urn; part of the ruins left behind from an ancient civilization deep in the rain forest. The mural is surrounded by faux finish walls that gives the whole room an Old World feel that plays great with the rich, warm colors throughout the home.

These homeowners wanted to add a big punch of color and a feeling of space to a plain white wall that was the focal point upon entering their home. We chose a scene that would reflect their love of sailboats and could pick up allot of beautiful marine blue colors that threaded throughout the house. I used the idea of French doors opening out onto a wooden deck to bring in architectural interest and warm golden browns.

A plain metal door has been cleverly disguised as a storage area for colorful beach and pool items. What a great conversation piece when entertaining outdoors!

This cheetah with lots of soft flora and fauna was painted on the insets of this low divider wall. What a great way to add interest and touches of warm color to really connect the visual look of the rooms. This kind of creative placement of art will be a great conversation piece at their dinner parties!

An arched "window" has been painted on a plain wall over a counter. On the "ledge" sits a decorated pot with Iris blooming. The sky and foliage in the background give the feeling one is looking out a kitchen window on a beautiful spring day. What a pleasant view for the hardworking cook!

A set of boring double doors has been transformed to look like one can walk through the colorful draperies out onto a verandah with potted flowers and a view of some distant island. The homeowner had a big imput in the mood of this design, and wanted lots of color and energy.

This " wrought iron gate" was actually an ugly elevator door that opens directly into the condo owner's foyer. After treating most of the 5000 sq.ft. living area with faux-finish, I gave the entry way a Mediterranean ambiance by painting the "cracked stone pedestals and old urns" to frame the ornate "iron work".
